Gunther Stent

The photograph immediately below, found in many books, was in fact one of a series of photographs. The researchers visted the Lederbergs at the Lederberg coastal home, "Kappadodici". Esther and Joshua BOTH conjointly did the original reasearch work on Esherichia coli K-12 usually credited only to Joshua. Esther was the sole discoverer of temperate bacteriophage Lambda. Esther alone, chose the name Lambda as she felt that this discovery was of the highest importance, ranking with Esherichia coli K-12". The coastal home was named "Kappadodici" ("K-12" in Italian) by Esther, and Esther chose the shape of the coastal home to replicate the shape of a virus such as Lambda. Circa 1991, Esther added a new room to her Stanford house at 716 Alvarado Row. This room, called the Pavilion, had an ocello (turret). She designed the room and the ocello to replicate the geometric shape of a virus, just as she did at Kappadodici.

Note that several other photos were taken on the same day and that the photos were shot in late 1965, but developed by Jan. 19, 1966.
